Budweiser Project 12
Rusty Surfboards founder Rusty Preisendorfer(right) is an icon in the surfing community. We teamed up with Rusty for our American Makers series and he named his son Clint as someone who is pushing the boundaries of surfboard design. We hope you enjoy the following photo essay as we capture a day in the life of a true American Maker.
When Clint takes on a custom project for a customer he needs to understand what type of waves they surf, how they surf and what features they are looking for: “Interpreting what a person says… even their hand movements… that’s a whole step in itself. You notice a lot of surfers talk with their hands when describing themselves surfing.”
Clint’s passion for shaping began at an early age: “It morphed from a recreational activity, surfing with my dad, to wanting to know why boards worked a certain way, what caused the feeling I was experiencing on a wave, how you could design that and mathematically dictate how a board can ride a wave.”
“When I was younger my dad was hesitant to bring me into the surfing world. He kind of pushed me towards baseball, and that was something I really enjoyed. I played baseball for a while when I was younger. I kind of forced my way into shaping a little bit, my dad didn’t necessarily make shaping appointments with me.”
